Qatar Domestic Worker Guide 2026
Salaries, full legal rights, and step-by-step job application guide for housemaids, cooks, nannies, gardeners and caregivers. Covering workers from Philippines, India, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia & Indonesia.
1. Domestic Workers in Qatar — Overview
Qatar has a very high demand for domestic workers — housemaids, cooks, nannies, gardeners, and caregivers — driven by high household incomes, long working hours among Qatari and expatriate families, and a strong cultural norm of employing live-in household help. Tens of thousands of domestic workers are employed in Qatar at any given time.
In 2017, Qatar enacted Law No. 15 specifically for domestic workers — a landmark legislation that gave housemaids, cooks, and gardeners enforceable legal rights for the first time. The law covers working hours, rest days, annual leave, sick leave, end of service gratuity, accommodation standards, and the right to change employers in cases of abuse.
Despite significant progress, domestic workers remain one of the more vulnerable categories of workers due to their isolation within private households. This guide is designed to ensure you know exactly what you are entitled to — before you sign a contract and after you arrive.

4. Understanding Your Employment Contract
A written employment contract is mandatory for all domestic workers in Qatar under Law No. 15 of 2017. The contract must be in a language you understand. If it is only in Arabic, insist on a translation before signing. Never agree to work without a signed written contract.
What Your Contract Must Include
⚠️ Contract Red Flags
- Contract only in Arabic — demand a translated copy
- No salary amount written — never accept verbal salary promises
- No rest day specified — this is your legal right
- Contract says duties include anything employer requests — vague duties can be exploited
- No mention of return flight — insist this is written in
- Different from what the agent described — do not sign if it differs from original offer
- Asked to sign a blank contract — this is a serious warning sign of trafficking
5. What to Do If You Face Abuse or Exploitation
MOL Domestic Worker Hotline
Call 16008 — available in Arabic, English, Urdu, Hindi, Tagalog, and other languages. The Ministry of Labour has a dedicated Domestic Worker Protection Unit that investigates complaints and can arrange emergency transfers.

Legal Complaint via MOL
File a formal complaint online at mol.gov.qa or via the Metrash2 app. The Labour Dispute Resolution Committee can order your employer to pay unpaid wages, gratuity, and compensation within weeks.
Types of Abuse That Are Illegal in Qatar

- Sexual harassment or assault
- Confiscation of your passport
- Locking you inside the house (confinement)
- Denying food or water
- Non-payment of wages
- Forcing you to work for other households without consent
- Threats of deportation to coerce compliance
- Preventing you from contacting your family or embassy
- Working you more than 10 hours/day without overtime pay

7. Changing Employers as a Domestic Worker in Qatar
When You Can Change Employer
✅ After 2 Years of Service
Domestic workers may freely change employers after completing 2 years of continuous service with the same employer. Give proper notice (as per your contract) and apply for an employer change through the Ministry of Labour portal.
⚡ Before 2 Years (Exceptional Cases)
You can change employer before 2 years in these situations:
- Physical or sexual abuse by employer or household members
- Non-payment of wages for 3+ months
- Employer assigns you to work for another household without your consent
- Employer violates any material term of your contract
- Court order supporting your right to transfer
How to Apply for an Employer Change
- Contact the Ministry of Labour Domestic Worker Protection Unit — call 16008
- If facing abuse, your embassy can file the transfer request on your behalf
- MOL reviews the request and can approve a temporary work permit while you seek a new employer
- The Workers' Support Fund can provide accommodation and basic support during the transition
- Your end of service gratuity and unpaid wages from the previous employer are still recoverable through the MOL complaint system
- Once a new employer is found, the new work permit (QID) is issued in the new employer's name
8. Checking Your Qatar Domestic Worker Visa
Your employer (sponsor) must apply for your work entry permit through the Qatar Ministry of Interior before you can travel. Before you book any flight or resign from your current situation, verify that your entry permit is genuinely approved.
- Ask your employer or recruitment agent for the entry permit / visa reference number
- Enter your passport number and nationality to check status
- A status of "Valid to Use" means your visa is approved and you may travel
- Never travel on the promise of a visa — only travel when you have confirmed it yourself
- If the visa has not been applied for, demand to know why and do not proceed
